Altötting

AltöttingAltötting – the Heart of Bavaria and one of Europe’s hearts as it is called by Pope Benedict XVI, is located in the lovely Upper-Bavarian Alpine region, not far from Salzburg and Lake Chiemsee. Since centuries Altötting is the spiritual centre of Bavaria and the most significant place of pilgrimage in Germany in veneration of the Virgin Mary. The “Black Madonna” is kept inside the octagon of the Chapel of Grace. From May to October numerous pilgrimages, festive church services and candlelight processions (always Saturday night) take place here. Pope Benedict XVI., who grew up in the Inn-Salzach region, and visited Altötting in 2006 remained closely connected to the Shrine in Altoetting since his childhood. For those wanting to explore the region Inn-Salzach a 248 km biking trail connects the places where Pope Benedict XVI spent his early and later childhood. In Altoetting guest can explore the city trough a guided tour or enjoy a weekend stay in the footsteps of Pope Benedict.
